PhRMA reviews industry strategies for addressing CYP induction

Simcyp News RSS

Date: 06 Jul 2009

A new report by members of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) group reviews the phenomenon of CYP induction and the methods used in its assessment.

The publication follows an anonymous survey of current industry practices. The authors, representing ten pharmaceutical research organisations, present and discuss the survey findings which demonstrate that CYP induction has gained wide acceptance as an important factor for consideration during drug discovery and development.

In their conclusions, the authors emphasize that the increasing reliance on data generated from in vitro studies has eliminated the need for unnecessary clinical drug-drug interaction studies for compounds that are not inducers in vitro. The acceptance of the in vitro data by clinical groups in pharmaceutical companies as well as regulatory agencies has been a significant development. In addition, notable progress has been made in the area of data interpretation and extrapolation from in vitro to the in vivo situation.

The paper by Valeria Chu et al. is entitled, ‘In vitro and in vivo induction of cytochrome p450: a survey of the current practices and recommendations: A Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) perspective.’  The article appears in the July edition of the journal Drug Metabolism and Disposition.
